DAVEH: It seems pretty obvious to me that
at least one of the positions put forth on TT about Calvin is wrong,
Judy. I don't quite see how both you and Dean can be right in your
assessment of him, and DavidM be right as well. Do you agree?
No, DavidM says he is not pro Calvin
either; he just thought Dean's and perhaps my sources to hard on him
and in his opinion not as
accurate as his sources.
Assuming
you do, and assuming you believe your (and Dean's) understanding of Calvin
is correct, then how do you explain that DavidM is likewise deceived about
Calvin? He is not under JS's influence, as you presume me to be.
I think DavidM is aware of what Calvin was
about but he seems to be focused on the historical aspect
and
the pull of culture etc. whereas Dean and
myself are focused on the spiritual. Today at BSF we
studied
Abram who was called out of his culture and
had to leave everything he knew and was familiar with to follow
God. Jesus
calls disciples to himself on the same
terms.
It wouldn't be my first choice but we are
limited by what is available in the town where we
live.
DAVEH: Is there an LDS Church there? And if so,
have you ever attended one of its meetings?
We have a Mormon Stake at the northern end
of our city and no I have never attended a meeting
there.
I have been to their Family History Room in
studying genealogy and would give them an A for
helpfulness
in that area..
Mormonism is a controlling religion
also with a prophet who can not ever be
wrong.

Did I not say exactly the opposite recently? Once again it is obvious
that truth is lacking in TT. FTR......Mormon prophets are not
infallible.
Oophs! Sorry if I missed it on that
one but Mormonism does put Joseph Smiths writings either on an equal
or higher level than the holy
scriptures.
Now, I don't want to
pick on your, Judy....But in light of your below comment to

I don't claim to be an expert on Mormonism
DaveH and I wouldn't put one mistatement on the same
level
as a life
teaching.
.......it would seem to me that your inability to discern truth might be related to who you've have chosen to follow in TT. Making such a
mistake would cause me to suspect whether or not your perspective on the
truth about Calvin is likewise incorrect.
Oh well! That's up to you DaveH - I
would call that the "gift of suspicion" which is rampant in all
religions.
BTW....Since you feel
so strongly about (against) Calvin, do you feel comfortable worshiping in a
setting that is somewhat aligned with his theology?
Calvin the man has gone to his reward
whatever that might be, it's the legacy he left behind that is
bothersome. Ppl seem to
think that following Calvin is the same as following Christ not realizing
that
all 'isms are problematic and best left
alone.

burned ppl at the stake for heresy but his life
and teaching don't measure up either.
FWIW.....I do have a genuine interest in Calvin, as I've heard a lot of
stuff related to him on
the radio program (Key Life Ministries with
Steve Brown) who is apparently a Calvinist (if that is
possible with
SB being a Presbyterian?) Anyway....hearing about him has given me
a mild interest
in knowing about his theology. Now that I'm
hearing two sides of the coin in TT, it just seems a
little
odd. I'm just not sure I want to spend a whole lot of time trying
to sort out the truth about
him from the clutter.
Not only possible but probable since
Presbyterianism is the fruit of Calvin's teachings
along
with the Geneva
Bible with his footnotes. The church I attend is Presbyterian and
there are lots
of nice folk
there. However, I am aware that there is a Calvinistic bent and so
guard my heart
against it. It wouldn't be my first
choice but we are limited by what is available in the town
where
we live. You may not see the
problem the same way since Mormonism is a controlling
religion
also with a prophet who can not ever be
wrong.
