There may be a nice GUI tool for this, but...
To change the resolution in XFree86, edit your /etc/X11/XF86Config file.
in the Section "Screen", you'll need something like:

        DefaultDepth 16
        SubSection "Display"
                Depth     16
                Modes     "1280x1024" "640x480" "800x600" "1024x768"
        Virtual   1280 1024
        EndSubSection

That's how I set my display for 16 bit color at a default of 1280x1024
