[Hi Don. I sent this to [EMAIL PROTECTED], but my email was rejected at
that address. Is there another email that the majordomo uses for the
list? Or could you pass this on to the list? Thanks. See you monday. marc.]
This is marc who wants help w/ a Linux install monday nite. Don is
right--I don't have enough experience w/ linux to have a preference for one
flavor over another. BTW, when & where is the meeting monday nite?
The box I want to install this on is an IBM P-100 from Truman's surplus
sale to which I've added bits & pieces from other computers I had laying
around. Specs:
* 132 MB RAM
* 3 GB HD (currently w/ 6.22 DOS which reports it as 2 GB [limitation of
DOS?], but I plan to dedicate the entire drive to linux)
* I added an Acer 10X CD-ROM from an old computer, but the CD-ROM doesn't
work reliably; Don said we might be able to do a network install?
* 3Com EthernetLink III network car (how do I tell if it is NE2000
compatible? This is an ISA card; I also have a PCI card from a Diamond
phone-net home networking kit that has an ethernet port on it--would it be
worth trying to get this to work? I want to hook the computer up to my DSL
line via a 4-port Linksys router. Linksys says that the router works w/
Linux but they don't support it.)
* Video: S3 Incorporated Trio64; 1 MB RAM
* No sound card (I would like one but don't want to pay new cost; anybody
have an old one they would like to unload??)
* no modem
I've done the other BIOS stuff, expect that their is no LBA setting for the
hard drive--just IDE Performance: compatible/high performance.
Thanks! marc.
