I hear ya Henning, and that's the reason that I got an Australian mirror site set up. All people down here can now point to planetmirror.com as their primary repository.
I expect that this sort of thing could be better handled in the future with aliases like au.maven.org (I'm assuming au.maven.apache.org is out of the question since it wouldn't be an ASF box), de.maven.org etc leveraging off the linux kernel mirror ideas. I've had no hassles since switching to planetmirror as my main repo.
