I intended that the xml document in my pseudo code was
a DOM.  It's very easy to manipulate XML data with
DOM.  It's also very simple to use a combination of
class maps and introspection to produce a DOM from a
data class.

Kevin, aren't you a big fan of Castor for xml
persistence.  Look at quick at www.jxml.com.  It's
OSS, and Bill LaForge is the author.  He approached
Apache about sponsoring it, but Apache wasn't
interested.  Quick builds a SAX parser dynamically
based on a schema which Bill calls qjml.  It does both
xml=>java and java=>xml.  I've very impressed with
qjml.  It does a great job of xml=>java and provides
data validation with property editors.
