I grappled with how to do this without really looking at your
code. I've now learned to first consult the code of the Turbine Tribal
Elders first!

So this would probably be an increase in performance
(not searching a parallel directory) but it would require educating the
page authors to add _layout for that template. Right?
If that's the case, I think it may be a good idea.
Also, I've been thinking that since we're using the parseTemplate(),
parseLayout() stuff in both services we can problaby move it to one
place so we don't need to duplicate it so much.
One final question, what kinda of an overall performance hit have you
seen from this design in FreeMarker?
