AFAIK, they've been there since the creation of Xerces (or shortly thereafter).
DOMWriter came over with IBM's xml4j codebase (IIRC) and the Serialization
package was a contribution from OpenXML <http://www.openxml.org/>. I imagine
that DOMWriter will eventually disappear, as there are movements afoot to create
a standard XML Serializer API <http://trax.openxml.org/>.
