It's obsolete. All the JServ developers moved into Tomcat project.

It's the reference implementation of Java Servlets specification,
blessed by Sun.
I acutally wasn't able to get mod_jk to run (probably my fault). We use
mod_jserv which
is also supported by Tomcat.

I'd say that the documentation is *very* good, and avaiable freely from
their website. 
You download one-month evaluation versions of *all* their software,
after you register 
on their website (for free).
Unlimted time/single seat developer license is something like $3500
