I'm also working with the 1.x branch and don't intend to switch to 2.x (simply because 1.x works very well) so I'm very glad that useful work is being done on the 1.x branch by both tg developers and other contributors, for example the OP in regard to the app engine. So a big +1 on keeping 1.x development alive and a big +1 for porting it to the app engine.
