I personally use SPE, Stani's Python Editor, and jEdit.

SPE can be challenging to find/install but it's really nice (and FLOSS)

jEdit is a general purpose text editor but does have some python niceties
such as highlighting. It's in java but works well (i am told) on
unix-alikes.
