I did watch both of her songs. I don't want to be snarky, because I
appreciate that she is a young female singer who seems not to be
posing as a slut. Her voice, especially on the second song, seemed
tinny and thin to me, but maybe that is part of some kind of
authenticity vibe that she is going for. It was nice that she did not
seem to be using a backtrack to fill-in her voice (though, in
retrospect it seemed like she could have used it). She is not
unattractive, but as you note, she is pretty average for a California
girl. I could not get a really good luck at the fiddler, but from what
I could tell she did seem potentially more interesting and enchanting
than young Swift.

I agree with others who have rated NPH one of the better guest hosts
in recent years - and that is coming from someone who never saw one
episode of Dougie Howser, and has not seen a single episode of his
current show either. But he was likable and funny and have that
trooper energy that you comment on that characterizes most of the good
hosts.

I actually liked some of the skits after the news - they were a little
quirky and were more conceptual than filled out, but that is in the
best tradition of SNL. Most of the real good skits don't have a real
ending. When they try to write them so they have a formal ending, it
usually sucks the life out of the body of the skit.

One huge problem they must solve asap is the lack of funny black
people on the show. As has been commentated on, they have no black
women, and their black man is almost always not funny (I do like his
Rerun character - but that seems to be his basic character). The Cold
Open was dead while he was on, then popped when the Ill Gov came on.
What does it mean about American that we can find a black man who most
people agree is competent to be president during the most difficult
period since WWII, but we can't find a black man funny enough to do 2
skits on late night television?
