Good movies should be considered for an Oscar, not just popular ones. If you think Titanic was the best movie of 1997 (or whatever year it was) then fine; we disagree about its quality, but that is the kind of disagreement that the idea of the Oscars is based on. But if you think Titanic should have won the Oscar that year because it sold so many tickets that the Academy had an obligation to respect the judgment of the masses, then I think you are way off. I am critical of the list of best picture nominees this year - but in the opposite direction. I think there were a number of films overlooked because they were considered not popular enough. Button was obviously nominated because it was popular. I would like to see a comedy good enough to win an Oscar get wide release.
