I know I'm late to the party on this one ( I was out of town during this
entire brouhaha ), but I want to chime in with two things:

1. I so agree with Wesley: you never lose by being more magnanimous,
especially in television. Television is an intimate medium in many
respects, and when the person you invite into your home on a daily basis has
the class to properly apologize to someone he's slighted, it can only make
him look better, not worse, and not a "pile of goo," or whatever Kevin
called him. I'm not a Palin fan, I agree that the joke was not that
offensive, but as a parent, if I said something about a young girl that
could be interpreted as offensive to the girl's parent, I'd apologize,
unreservedly. Saying offensive things about young kids is never classy-I
don't care if the kid has been pimped out by their parents to trumpet family
values or whatever. It's just not cool. It doesn't lessen Dave's so-called
"maverick" status in my eyes, mostly because I think he pretty much gave
that title up when he moved to 11:30pm.

2. Olbermann made hay with Palin's response to Dave's apology, taking
her to task for again misunderstanding what freedom of speech really means
in our country: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3036677#31396154

That is all.
