I don't have an inside track. This is only my speculation. CBS has only a small temporary problem if this controversy were to continue. They would have a crippling problem if they had nobody for their 11:35 PM slot, and considering that Dave's Worldwide Pants also produces the 12:30 show, they could be left with a 2 hour hole where affiliates could order syndicated programming and keep the network from getting a talk show back there easily. On top of that, I don't know the legal arrangement between CBS and Worldwide Pants, specifically if CBS would have to buy Pants out if they want the slot back before the end of the contract. CBS wouldn't fire Dave and when both sides know this the network can't put any real pressure on him. The pressure would come from either Dave's professional peers or his security people. The people who work at the show are in touch with people all around the country (as are most of us in this connected age) and they could have heard about reactions from people outside the TV loop. Or in the hate mail Dave referred to last night there were some threats and the security people advised Dave to go out of his way to resolve the conflict.
