In the summer of 1969, Dick Cavett did a talk show on ABC three nights
a week at 10 p.m.  When Joey Bishop quit, he moved to late-night in
December of that year.  Of course, this was 40 years and only meant
originally as a summer replacement.

Very much so.  On nights when there's hot news, "Nightline" frequently
beats both Letterman and Conan in the ratings.
