Leno had his Worst. Week. Ever. in week 7, averaging 5 M for the week, which I think is pretty close to the rock bottom the show can tolerate on a regular basis. True, it was up against World Series games on 2 of the 5 nights (and it is the most popular WS in 5 years), but it was also up against reruns 3 of the 5 nights (2 of those 3 with no WS). It also had its second worst Friday and Monday (without WS competition), and third worst Tuesday (no WS, but against reruns). It has been hard to find many "normal" weeks to evaluate the Leno show on, of the 7 weeks, 1 was the premiere, one had a high rated MNF game, 1 had MLB playoffs, and last week and this week will have the WS. No doubt the worst news for Leno and NBC is how poorly they did against reruns - especially M and T when there was no WS. I still think NBC should/may consider trying out a drama one one or two nights (maybe Monday and Thursday). I bet NBC wishes it had Medium to run on Monday night at 10:00. And if Southland had developed in to a low rated (e.g. around Leno's 4.7M) prestige show that did well with high SES groups, I bet NBC would rather be running it on Thursdays. Even the TV By The Numbers guys twisted the knife a little about Leno's performance vs the reruns, notable because they have been particularly well deposed towards him all season: http://tvbythenumbers.com/2009/10/29/the-jay-leno-show-loses-to-cbs-repeats-again/32000 Sure, the World Series was on, but the thing is, the CSI: NY repeat aired against the World Series too, and it did better than The Jay Leno Show ( 2.2 adults 18-49 rating vs. 1.5). Leno was also thrashed on Monday Night versus a rerun of CSI: Miami (3.1 vs. 1.3) and tied with a repeat of The Good Wife on Tuesday. One of the things NBC publicly predicted was that with Leno airing about 46 weeks a year, since scripted shows air only about 22 new episodes a year, Leno would fare better when it was up against repeats. While “fare better” doesn’t necessarily mean “win”, the early data is that Leno isn’t faring better against the reruns. At least not in terms of seeing any ratings increases. The gap between Leno and the CBS dramas may be a smaller when they are in reruns, but so far the ratings the dramas lose in reruns have resulted in any gains for The Jay Leno Show. --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ TV or Not TV ....
