I think NBC was really up against it. They could not face the affiliates
without giving them an exit strategy from the Leno Experiment, but they
could not really ask Leno to keep doing the 10:00 show for the next 9 months
after publicly announcing that it was a failure. Given this failure, they
now feel that if they have to choose between Conan and Leno they would chose
Leno, and they want to rewind as much as they can back to the point where
Leno is their late night guy, and they deal with whatever problems Conan
competition may present down the road.

I have been saying since the start of the summer that the problem NBC had
here was the absence of any graceful way out whenever the Leno experiment
was over (either after one year or several). Rather than seeing Leno as the
answer to all of their 10:00 problems, they should all along have been
using him as a buffer to allow them to develop a few more quality 10:00
shows that could have been worked into the schedule as needed.
