But late night tv was one of the areas where NBC has been able to count on
ratings dominance (and thus juicy profits). This whole grand strategy has
been about NBC seeing itself as having learned from the last mess they made
of their late night transition (which resulted in a major fractionating of
thier late night audience) and proactively taking steps to keep both Leno
and Conan from becoming competitors. The tragic irony is that it seems to be
just these proactive steps that have made things worse - not only are they
in danger of losing one of Conan/Leno, but, as you say, both of them have
had much of the shine taken off thier luster.

I think the next step here is all about Conan - unlike Leno (or Ferguson)
Conan did not reference this in his monologue last night, and I have not
heard anything about where his head is at. He is getting screwed, and it
remains to be seen if he will take it.

30 Rock has referenced more arcane matters than this, I am sure we will see
something soon.
