"this was not an issue for our network really - this was an issue for our
affiliates" - Gaspin
"It was working financially. we were actually making money at 10 o'clock.
for the network, it was not yet a wrong decision" -Gaspin on Leno

I wonder if the actual books will ever be open to public inspection on this?
I really doubt that these statements are true, unless profitability is
defined extremely narrowly.

It is probably true that the advertising revenue taken in on the JLP
exceeded the direct costs of producing the JLP. But when you account for the
decreased ratings of a show like SVU when it moved from 10:00 to 9:00, when
you look at the decreased revenue from The Tonight Show, and when you look
at the decreased revenue for the affiliates, (and, possibly, the negative
effect on the Morning schedule from not as many people having their
televisions tuned to NBC when they fall asleep), I don't think there is any
way NBC can say they were making money on the Leno program.
