I really doubt that these statements are true, unless profitability is defined extremely narrowly. It is probably true that the advertising revenue taken in on the JLP exceeded the direct costs of producing the JLP. But when you account for the decreased ratings of a show like SVU when it moved from 10:00 to 9:00, when you look at the decreased revenue from The Tonight Show, and when you look at the decreased revenue for the affiliates, (and, possibly, the negative effect on the Morning schedule from not as many people having their televisions tuned to NBC when they fall asleep), I don't think there is any way NBC can say they were making money on the Leno program.
