I suspect that coverage on ABC would be a part of any bid. I'm not sure the USOC is willing to lose the small but significant fraction of households without cable or satellite.
Even if everything is shown live on one channel or another, I kind of actually hope that the big, bloated prime time show of previously-recorded events sticks around. Sochi (2014) is 8 hours ahead of the east coast, so any of the big afternoon/evening events would happen while people are at work and Rio (2016) is 3 hours ahead of New York, so there would be a very limited window for live events there. I bet they could either make it shorter (or fit more in), just by assuming that if viewers really cared about the preliminaries in the women's 1500 meters or the short program from some unknown figure skater with no chance of winning, they would have watched/recorded the live coverage.
