Graham does it as well as 70s-era Carson, and while some of it is the selection of guests, there have been some groupings that worked from sheer luck (50 Cent and Catherine Tate come to mind).
He also has plenty of alcohol on hand, should guests care for the stuff. While I only remember seeing it occasionally on stage with Carson reruns, I'm pretty sure there was plenty backstage. He had Michael Sheen and Amy Ryan on at the same time a few weeks ago. Sheen came on for tweets and emails, and stuck around for the rest of the show. It worked well, but Sheen and Ferguson are old friends, so it was more about them than the pairing of Sheen and Ryan.
