But the economy of this state is in a shambles, torn not just by the historic downturn, but by decades of dysfunctional and cowardly state government. Our unemployment rate is still stuck about 20% higher than the US average. And one of the biggest scandals is what has happened to our school system. When I was a kid California was known for it sterling public education, but now the K-12 system is a joke (and the post-secondary system, once unparalleled on the planet, is close on its heels). One of the biggest crimes is that we have hundreds of incompetent and lazy teachers who we can't get rid of, while we keep laying off challenging and stimulating teachers. One advantage of a recession is supposed to be cutting away the dead wood in the labor force, but in public education the opposite seems to happen, with the best teachers tending to get cut first. I don't know anything about Kevin apart from what we have all learned on this list, and I find myself disagreeing with about 75% of what he writes here. But I I know that if my 12 year old son, who just started 8th grade, had a teacher with provoked even half as much of the productive disagreements I have had with Kevin on this list over the years, I would be overjoyed. Good luck to Kevin on the job search (and to us all in these difficult economic times). -- TV or Not TV .... The Smartest (TV) People!
