It's pretty much the same craziness in D.C. for sporting events. With the notable exception of the football stadium, the other venues are within a few hundred yards of Metro stations. It's not so bad for basketball or hockey, as that arena is close to a stop that serves three lines, and there are other stops within a few blocks (the Verizon Center is in the downtown core). Nationals Park is near a stop that serves just one line, and other stops are a much longer walk away. So that station can get more crowded.
The thing with D.C. is more about multiple events in one evening straining the system. While not the same thing by any stretch, there was more than the Rally going on last weekend. Howard University had its homecoming, and the horse show was in town. Didn't have a problem at the Rose Garden in Portland, but I've only been to minor sporting events (indoor soccer) there, not the Blazers. Red Line. Or if you're talking about the whole system, the 'L'. The process used to be worse, until they completely rebuilt the Addison station about 15 years ago. The station house was about a third as big as it is now, and there were separate northbound and southbound platforms, much narrower than the current single platform. But I don't think it's any more nightmarish than leaving any other sporting event via train, even AT&T Park -- although admittedly, the variety of rail options available there (Muni Metro, Caltrain, or walking up to BART) spreads out the crowd a bit more than at Wrigley Field. -- Jim Ellwanger <[email protected]> <http://www.ellwanger.tv> -- TV or Not TV ....
