In Israel in the late '80s a popular DJ named Gabi Gazit was given a
prime time talk show. I remember his first show - he walked out on a
Late Night type set, with a band at audience left, and started a
monologue. His style was ironic detachment and during the monologue he
said some things or asked questions of his bandleader and got non
sequiturs in return. After the monologue he sat behind a desk and did
standard interviews of prominent people, business and political
leaders as well as entertainers. Within a few weeks he started the
show behind the desk, no more monologue or band, and had a long run
with the show.
