I liked Prime Suspect, but I am wondering what a contemporary version of
that show can possibly have in common with the original. My memory is that
the main context for PS was the challenges facing a competent, complex woman
working her way up in a male dominated profession. Not to say that women no
longer face any discriminatory attitudes in police work, but building a show
around that premise is going to seem a bit dated, isn't it? And if that is
not the major theme of the show, then won't it just be a crime show
featuring a tough, talented and complex female detective? I like crime
shows, and will no doubt watch it, but I am not sure I see even a tenuous
connection to the original.
