"Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" will be out in theaters later this week. I just attended a preview screening. It has everything I like in a movie: Suspense, drama, intrigue, British accents, and even a hot Russian-speaking blond. And I could not have liked it less. The first hour consisted of men with British accents staring at each other. Flashbacks were involved, and few of the characters ever really evolved so it was tough to tell who was who half the time. Mostly, though, just staring men being British. During the second half of the movie, things started to come together. The staring British men began to walk and even drive while staring and being British. The ending was like something out of "Murder She Wrote" where you as the viewer couldn't possibly have actually solved the big mystery yourself. And I don't think this is a spoiler, but the choice of ending music was the same song Steve Martin used to open "L.A. Story," and it was staggeringly misused in this instance. Last but not least, though my Russian is far from perfect, I heard one tell-tale mistake that let me know whoever they hired to ensure the Russian was accurate just used Google Translate. I've never read the series of books upon which the film is based, but I have to believe the characters and story are more clearly defined than this cinematic adaptation. I'm sure this movie will win a lot of awards, but I opted not to stick around for the post-film Q&A with the screenwriter -- I was fairly certain if I'd stayed I'd have called him a hack. -- Kevin M.
