I am a big Stewart/Colbert fan, but I have never understood the passion that many of my friends an colleagues have for Maher. I thought his work on PI was very over-rated, and his HBO show is extremely hit and miss for me. I was listening to the Norm Macdonald interview on WTF the other day, and one of them (I think Maron) mentioned that Maher used to be a straight punchline comic, and just fell into political humor when he found that it worked for him.
