In my case, the act of recording a show or a small segment was never what gave me pleasure...*watching* it was/is. So I'm perfectly good with setting the DVR to record the whole show and fast forwarding to, say, just the last five minutes of something. :)
Even before I lost the manual recording ability, I still recorded the whole show. There was much less activity involved when programming with the remote that way.

They removed it from the software. Formerly, if you wanted to record,
say, just the last five minutes of something, you could do that. No
more.
