...both of which can be done (and much more quickly, I'm sure) by simply recording the entire time slot following the one that you get some "overrun" from. No more than 5-6 presses on the remote control per show, for me anyway, compared to all the dozens you'd need to open the programming application, select a channel, enter a starting time, enter a finish time (or amount of minutes you want to record), and any other options you want to use and then exit back out to the main screen.
*shrug* But, to each his own. It's not that much work your way, either...just definitely more than mine. It's not like you'll work up a sweat either way. :)

The advantages of manual recording were primarily this:
1. Catching the end of something (on USA or SciFi or Discovery, for
instance) that you missed because when you recorded the program the
first time, it ran past the "official" time slot, and
2. Adjusting CBS shows on Sunday nights during football season. Less
important now, since I watch all three of them, but back in the day,
it was more efficient to notice when 60 Minutes started, and then know
that I could record TAR from, say, 8:26 until 9:24 (who needs
promos?).
