The advantages of manual recording were primarily this:

1. Catching the end of something (on USA or SciFi or Discovery, for
instance) that you missed because when you recorded the program the
first time, it ran past the "official" time slot, and

2. Adjusting CBS shows on Sunday nights during football season. Less
important now, since I watch all three of them, but back in the day,
it was more efficient to notice when 60 Minutes started, and then know
that I could record TAR from, say, 8:26 until 9:24 (who needs
promos?).
