Time Warner uses a particularly unfriendly program guide, making navigation followed by programming no quicker than the old manual method (which was quite swift, as long as you knew how it worked). And I do employ the tricks you describe, plus one other: I'll record the show after the one I want to catch the very end of, and set it to start recording early. That way, I don't have to FF to get to the part I want (another action that TW's software makes awkward and unreliable).
