On the other hand the tweet ban (Romenesko has the memo from CBS corporate
ordering compliance) seems heavy handed and unnecessary, especially if they
are broadcasting the same. Indeed the "Newsbreaker" Larry King operation
has been tweeting what the host, former LA reporter David Begnaud, is
seeing on TV (the live stream of Newsbreaker when it is on is a surreal
view of the future of TV news, with Begnaud acting as a video and twitter
deejay of death and destruction). Those decisions should come from local
editors directing their staff and not company wide memos.

There are legitimate competing interests here. But in a dynamic situation
like this where people have already been hurt and killed, including two law
enforcement officers, and reporters on scene would both be endangering
themselves (and officers who would have to protect or rescue them) and
potentially endangering others by reporting information the suspect could
be monitoring, I am inclined to give the lawmen the benefit of the doubt,
and I would think most journalists would comply, up to a point.

Reporters who determine that, for example, the suspect has been either
killed or put in custody, would be in a position to then refuse to comply
with attempts to keep them off scene.
