A few other media observations: LA stations KNX, KABC, and KFI did not break away from Big Bear coverage for the State of the Union, which might be unprecedented. The only LA radio stations I found covering SOTU were the two area NPR stations and 870am (the right wing talk station).
The CBS reporter who was the only one on scene for the shootout and was the only one still close to the cabin where the suspect supposedly hid out is not backing down from his statements that contradict police accounts of what happened. He maintains they fired tear gas canisters into the cabin, describing how the smoke changed from green to black. He is also not reporting a body was inside the cabin. Local media has repeatedly been running "confirmed" reports that a body has been found inside the remains of the cabin, citing each other as additional sources for the rumor. Sheriff spokeswoman just finished a press conference flatly denying the rumors, stating the cabin is still too hot to enter. Several reporters questioned her about the "conflicting reports" of a body, and she smacked them down. News outlets have spent the last several minutes backpedalling, and it has been noted the added security at the homes of police officers remains. Curious. I concede it is unlikely the guy survived, but if he did and he is still on the loose, it's gonna be marshal-law-like conditions here in Southern California. -- Kevin M.
