I can't always say this, so I will seize and relish the opportunity: I
agree with everything Dave said (well, except I guess that I like Louis CK).

That brings us to Zadan and Meron. I was generally aware of them (I would
have identified them most easily as the producers of Chicago). But on
inspection I see these are the people responsible for Smash (at least last
year).

McFarland was as good or better as anyone had a right to expect him to be.
For people who did not like him, the fault I think has to be laid at Z&M's
feet. Even those who liked McFarland may have to fault Z&M for other
aspects of the show - it frankly felt like it was under-rehearsed or
under-prepared, and under-edited or supervised. It reminded me of opening
night at my daughters's high school plays, when the cast often still did
not really know their lines or blocking and light and sound cues were
missed. By Saturday night the productions were always a lot better.
