My attitude about the award shows is they should only matter to those in the industry they relate to. I don't suddenly find Mumford & Sons better because they won a Grammy. I'm not more motivated to see a movie because it wins an Oscar. I don't feel validated when my favorite TV show wins an Emmy, nor do I feel like less of a man when the show I like loses. But a large segment of the population has made these shows into more than they are. And a segment within that segment loves to hate the shows but cannot stop watching them. I have the unique perspective of having worked on the shows, and I can tell you the criticism is known by those behind-the-scenes. Show writers are handicapped by all the special interests (studios, networks, famous faces, etc) who won't allow them to write fresh or inspired material. Hosts have to find an impossible balance between getting laughs from a theater of insiders and trying to entertain the masses watching on TV. Actors and singers and entertainers who normally take 15 takes to get something right in their respective fields struggle to read three lines live into a camera (largely because they lack stage/theatrical experience and training). None of those issues will ever go away because the shows can't be all things to all people. But we don't need to nitpick those things because they are pervasive. Check people's Tweet's from last year's Oscars and they will moreorless read the same as this year's. And the world keeps spinning. -- Kevin M. (RPCV) -- -- TV or Not TV ....
