I admitted I didn't watch the Oscars, but to me, this backstage moment best captures what the show ought to be about, specifically peers offering praise to each other.
http://gma.yahoo.com/video/jennifer-lawrence-oscar-interview-interrupted-080000597.html I know next-to-nothing about Jennifer Lawrence, but as she was backstage being interviewed by George Stephanopoulos, Jack Nicholson snuck up behind her to offer praise. Two things stood out for me. First, the way the cameras were positioned, you can see Jack first use his handkerchief to make himself presentable before approaching Lawrence. Second, Lawrence's reaction could not be faked. She's a kid, new to the craft, and one of the legends of the business made the very conscious choice to stop and compliment her. The sincerity in her smile... the honest-to-God joy of that moment. You just don't see that on stage amidst the scripted banter and rushed acceptance speeches and all the other ephemera that clutters the show. For all of Nicholson's blustery image and persona, for him to shake a kid's hand and tell her she's doing great... that took class. And a part of me wants to believe that moment meant more to Jennifer Lawrence than the statue she received. -- Kevin M. (RPCV) -- -- TV or Not TV .... The Smartest (TV) People!
