I am very much enjoying the opportunity to see many of the Winter Olympic events live, mostly on NBCSP. I just set my DVR, and then watch it when I can. But these first two days have been somewhat confusing, because in addition to showing some events live, NBC is also repeating the same events in their midday program, and in some cases again in the primetime show. It is hard to tell which of the primetime events I have already seen, and which I have not.
This is even more difficult for at least one event - ice skating, where NBC uses one announcing team for the live broadcast, and a completely different team for the primetime show. I thought this might be to make it easier to edit the show for primetime, but that would mean that the primetime announcing team is talking over video tape of the performances? Or maybe they are mostly using their live commentary, but then working in some vocals recorded later to smooth over the editing? But then, why use two announcing teams? I like Tom Hammond and Scott Hamilton, from the primetime team better than Terry Gannon and Johnny Weir who do the live coverage, but surprisingly, I think Tara Lipinski is doing a really good job, and would like to see her with the A team. Actually, I wish there was only the A team (with Lipinski). The former Ice Dancer who sits in with Dan Patrick is pretty. I am looking forward to Curling, which I guess will be on CNBC and USA. I will watch the medal rounds of hockey, but until then I can safely ignore it. There is a lot less winter olympic events than summer - I guess I always knew that, but it is really obvious comparing trying to watch as much as I can now compared to the summer games in London, where the sheer volume was overwhelming, and took like 5 channels from the NBÇ family. Aside from hockey so far everything I think has been on either NBC or NBCSP. I don't mean to be bitching about anything - I am very appreciative that NBC is making so much available live (and I have not even gone online). Maybe if they would be willing to give a periodic tag to live events that will show up on primetime (something like "if you missed any of this event, or want to see it again, you can join Bob Costas tonight in primetime"). that would help clear things up - but I will muddle through. -- -- TV or Not TV ....
