Personally, I *am* taking Conan into consideration.  He and Fallon are who I'd rank at the bottom of the list of hosts, based strictly on their interviewing skills.  Nobody hides their "surreptitious" (sarcasm) glances at their notes worse than Conan, and I can almost see him reading from a script when a big-name comedian's sitting in the chair, and they're walking through a rehearsed bit disguised as a conversation.

Oliver would be an excellent choice, but he doesn't have anywhere even close to the name recognition to warrant handing him the reins of a Big 4 late night slot.

Seriously, I'd bet on Chelsea Handler before Oliver.

I have spent the better part of five minutes trying to find out the answer to this question and failed: "How long is John Oliver's contract with HBO?" Because that's the name that jumps out at me as the obvious answer. All the names PG posted a while back are going to want cash, and a lot of it, as well as being accepting of working four-days-a-week. Oliver is (relatively) cheap, hot, talented, and probably one of the better interviewers out there.

<joke>And if Oliver's not available, just get Zaltzman.</joke>

One other point: I'm not understanding *why* everyone thinks Conan's not an option. Does an irrational industry really look at him as damaged goods? Do we think Conan's wouldn't at least want another crack at broadcast 11:35?

Seriously?  I'd rank Stewart second, behind Letterman, and on a par with Craig Ferguson (in the sense that Ferguson's interviews are usually entertaining, if they're not necessarily all that serious)...at least among those hosts whose shows are primarily entertainment-centric.

I'm also going to be interested in what CBS tries to do.  The pickin's for a replacement seem awfully slim to me.  I can't imagine them completely abandoning late night, with the investment they made in the franchise over the last 20 years, but the wrong choice for a replacement host (or a replacement show, for that matter) could have disastrous results.

I doubt Stewart wants the job. And I'm not sure he would be particularly good at it. Stewart may be the worst celebrity interviewer currently working in late night.

It will be interesting to see if CBS Decides to compete directly with ABC and  NBC with someone who can do Internet size bits of comedy aimed at the young. Or if they do more counterprogramming serving their older audience and those not disposed to the comedy of the Jimmy's.

I can’t think of anybody who’s as qualified and ready to go right now as Jon Stewart.  There was a period of 2-3 years just before The Daily Show when Worldwide Pants (Letterman’s production company) had Stewart on a retainer, but they apparently never found the right project for him.

He’s got the interviewing skills down, and could easily handle a monologue.  After some of the stuff they’ve done at TDS, imagine what he could do with a CBS-sized production budget.

Of these, for me, please not Ferguson, DeGeneres or Seinfeld. I am not really familiar with Handler. Each of the rest would be interesting - I like Poehler (but then, why not Fey?).

Craig Ferguson
Chelsea Handler
Amy Poehler
Ellen DeGeneres
Stephen Colbert
Louis CK
Jerry Seinfeld
