Random observation regarding Mr. Letterman: The other night he had Lindsay Lohan on the show. I know he has a quasi-paternal thing going with her, but he's sent a few verbal punches and jabs her way when she makes headlines. A week or two ago, a list was published in Lindsay's handwriting of some of the celebrities she's bedded. No mention of it at all; instead they called Oprah and discussed scrambles eggs. Having Lindsay on the show and not talking about her sex life is like having Bill O'Reilly on the show and not talking about being an asshole.
I will miss Dave when he is gone, but in the time he has left on the show, I wish he'd commit to balls-to-the-wall performance. Conan's last weeks as host of the Tonight Show, when he had nothing to lose. Dennis Miller's last week of his syndicated talk show, when he abandoned convention almost entirely. Jay Leno during the WGA strike, when he was himself. Craig Ferguson in Scotland. Those are the benchmarks (some lower than others). I know Letterman is capable of meeting or exceeding them, I just don't know if he will.
