It's perfectly possible: 3:00 PM ET/2:00 PM CT/1:00 PM MT/Noon PT. None of
these are spectacularly out of range for a football game (on Thanksgiving,
for example, they start the first game at 12:30, and the traditional late
games start as late as 4:25)

You're right that the NFL will never do it because it would impact revenues
negatively. But as anyone who watched the last day of the 2012 EPL season
will attest, it sure does make it a LOT more interesting.
