I guess that there is already a single game slot that's watched simultaneously across the whole of the US...
To keep revenues for the TV stations high, imagine selling advertising packages across all the networks. Antitrust issues aside, ratings might matter less if the advertising had already been made. Putting the games into evening prime would effectively create an extra 'playoff' TV slot across networks probably generating bigger overall audiences. But I imagine that it'd only really happen after an especially egregious end of season playoff case where an outcome significantly affected beyond just resting players.
