Thank you!
It’s too bad I didn’t know of your interest before now; there’s a fundraiser in Napa for him tonight (it was originally scheduled for the day after the earthquake). His opponent has finally agreed to one debate; another has been scheduled and he will be talking to an empty chair if she doesn’t show up. I’ll let the list know if there’s any entertainment value. They met for the first time at a forum last week. Apparently it didn’t go so well as she immediately cancelled her scheduled appearance at another one. Because he is so candid, unfortunately most of what he says at dinner can’t be repeated on a discussion list. When I became a fan, it was because of his voice; discovering he has a fine mind has been a lovely bonus. I think it is very cool to hear that you have been able to break bread with him and work on his campaign. If Shannen Doherty was running for congress in Burbank and Kevin was one of her precinct captains and having dinner with her, I think we would want to hear about it here. Personally, as a liberal Dem living in a deep blue state and district, I make it a point to donate to Democrats running in difficult districts across the country, and usually spend time in the fall making phone calls for them. I will be happy to add Mr. Aiken to my list. He watches a lot of TV and used to tweet about his favorite shows. Many of his friends work or have worked in TV and are financially supporting his candidacy, e.g., Penn Jillette. He needs to raise a lot of money to pay for TV advertising. His opponent has a lot more money, most of it from PACs. His opponent made the final 4 of Bill Maher’s Flip-a-District contest. Voters in North Carolina have described him as Opie Taylor, all “growed” up. On a personal note, after 11 years as a fan, I’ve finally gotten to know him a little these past six months. I’ve had dinner with him twice and attended several fundraisers. He’s really fun to talk with. On national issues, he listens, asks pointed questions, and as the Cook Report noted, is better informed than the vast majority of elected officials it’s encountered. He’s really doing his homework. I know no one here’s a fan of Larry King, but here’s a recent interview <http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FefQbx3E4R0&feature=youtu.be> . And, here’s a piece <http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QbTl_0vfyXc&feature=em-share_video_user> on his opponent. (I was going to include his appearance on the The Colbert Report, but apparently it’s been taken down.) So if you think Congress should be made up of smart people who like to think and listen – or if you’d just like to see a gay man from North Carolina elected to the House of Representatives -- then you really should think about donating to his campaign www.clayaiken.com/blueteam Yes, I’m on an official team trying to help out as much as I can because I believe in the cause. So, please consider sending a few dollars his way. Campaigns are so expensive, and even though he may have a few wealthy friends, they’re limited by law in what they can contribute ($2600). $25 would be great; $100 would be even better. I’ll be happy to answer any questions about the campaign – either on list or off list. Melissa -- -- TV or Not TV .... The Smartest (TV) People!
