I basically agree with you. Any employer can only act on what they are reasonably confident is true at any one point in time. If an initial review does not indicate any "felony", then slap his wrists and let him get back to work. If later investigation shows signs of a felony, then fire him. The six month suspension suggests they currently do not have evidence of a felony, but want to pander to the mob, and hope that in time either the public will forget their faux-outrage, or NBC will figure out a way to let Williams go that does not screw the ratings of the Nightly News.
I doubt we will actually see a six-month suspension here. Either NBC will decide to bring him in out of the cold sooner than that, or decide to cut him off completely.
