This is one of those often hyped news stories that I think distracts from actual issues of discrimination. Maybe I'm biased because of all the horrible award shows I worked, but even if the next decade of Oscars, Emmys, and Grammys were all won by African American Muslim women, it would still be a superficial victory. I've never cared if a performer I liked won awards, I've never chosen media based on how many trophies it earned. And the steady decline in award show ratings would seem to indicate my views are -- for once -- aligned with most of the public. There are great black actors and there are crappy black actors. There are stellar female actors and there are abysmal female actors. Sometimes the good ones get the recognition they deserve, often times they do not. I will like who I like regardless. And prejudice will be unaffected by the handing out of golden statues.
