The motion or decision are applauded by the current membership and then nothing happens. It turns out that good intentions are not enough to solve the problems. Eventually diversifying the membership is made a priority and then it turns out that new diverse people are going to have to replace current people (in leadership if there are no limits to the number of members). So while everybody wants diversity, when it becomes a reality, somebody is going to lose his or her privileges. The Academy is not the first or only organization to deal with these tensions and AFAIK there is no universal answer. I empathize with Mr. Bassing.
