I'm not sure I agree with you on that - What Trump has done with Fox News,
Brietbart, and the intimidation and manipulation of and straight out lying
to the news media is as bad as what Bush/Cheney did with Miller; the
difference I guess is that this time the repuatuable news organizations are
digging in, not caving in as they did on Iraq (which I guess is your point,
so maybe I don't disagree so much with the conclusion as the construction).

As I noted, I also have not seen evidence that Pelley's approach has paid
off with higher ratings or profit for CBS - yet. I don't think though that
cutbacks in newsgathering around the world will be a factor - unless I have
missed something and CBS has cut back more than the other networks, and
done so since the election. I agree of course that the shrinkage of
international news bureaus has beeen shameful, but I think it is a lagging
indicator of the network's investment in real news. If the networks have
not increased spending on newsgathering resources over the next few years,
then it will be hard to argue that market forces have resulted in more
serious television news coverage; but if they are spending 3 more minutes
per night on serious national coverage from their NY anchor desks (I pulled
that out of my butt, I have no idea if anything like that is happening)
then I would call that a good down payment.

Again, my main argument along these lines is not quite that we are in the
midst of a golden age of journalism, but rather that the predictions of not
that long ago that the modern context does not allow or reward real
journalism seem to be taking on water. Bezos, and the asshole, and maybe
the Eye or showing signs that modern media can make a fair profit and still
do serious news. I hope more join them.
