For what it's worth, one of the core members of Stay Human (sax player Eddie
Barbash) left the show band at the beginning of the year. I have no idea his
reasons, and have seen no discussion as to why.

As a literal description of Batiste himself it is cruel and unfair; but as a
short hand poetic summary of how his recent persona on the show comes across, I
think, sadly, it is spot on.
WTF is he doing? It does seem like somebody told him to be more like Paul, but
Batiste is by all accounts a fantastic musician - he's got to have a better ear
than that. And whoever is mixing the sound for the show is not doing him any
favors - half the time it feels like he got on the phone on the upstairs
extension and thinks he is having a conversation with someone else during our
call.
I have felt from day 1 that Colbert made a mistake with his choice of
bandleader, and while I am glad to see the show finding its legs, nothing that
has happened has changed my initial impression. Batiste is a likeable guy and
I'm sure an amazing musician, but so much of what he plays, while technically
high quality, sounds to me like an opera star covering Janis Joplin. And he is
almost always out of his depth with the kind of comedy Colbert does. I don't
know what cool band is out there that could take his place, but I hope that as
soon as it is graceful enough to do so they replace him.

While I agree that Jon Batiste often treats the monologue as a chance to beat
to death a bad Paul Shaffer impression, I think calling it Uncle Tomming is
unfair.
