Right - I think that is what we are saying. But the point is that recently they have clearly intentionally changed the way they use him. He has been making a lot more verbal comments and reactions to the monologue - as it happens and with some kind of dedicated mike, which Colbert does not respond to or interact with. But these are so random and betray so little understanding of the joke Colbert is telling that it does come across as pandering ass-kissing.
Actually, I think they may be realizing this, as this week his verbalizations have been modified a bit, and more along the lines of loud laughing and musical cues, with a little less of the odd commentary They clearly feel they have a special and unique talent with Batiste that they have not been able to deploy properly...
