I watched the whole thing. The Jet Skis did not save time, but he used it for moderate comic effect a few times throughout and at the end.
What I really liked was something I assume the director did: One of the speeches had gone long, and the orchestra (despite what Jimmy promised) did start to play him off. But within a second or two it was clear he was referencing his mother who had just died from cancer, and the music got cut off immediately (so quickly and cleanly that I think it must have been someone cut the audio, and not the conductor telling them to stop). This kind of thing happens pretty often, and they just play right through it. It seemed to me someone had paid attention and was ready to react appropriately. Jimmy seemed to have soft peddled much of his stuff tonight - not bad, but not much bite. I think the bit about visiting the theater next door to thank the real people (didnt they do something like that before?) fell kind of flat. Still, there was enough of inherent interest to make it a pretty compelling show - and I won my Oscar pool (well, tied or first - damn those shorts).
