Contrarians gonna contrary. As a Canadian, my direct exposure to NPR is through its podcasts and the occasional listen on TuneIn or satellite radio (with the exception of two years living in Chicago where WBEZ was my replacement for CBC). I can't speak to how NPR is changing in the way a person who has it on all day, every day can. But I have noticed that, as I inexorably move out of the precious 18-49 demographic, programming in all media is decidedly not targeted to me. I accept this with a shrug and the occasional muttering about "kids these days." But I suppose, as with all things, YMMV. I think NPR shows are no less valuable in podcast form, and/or podcasts can transition without too much trouble to mainstream broadcast.
